A New Tradition

The day after Thanksgiving we watched the TV special, The Elf on the Shelf, with Nonnie. We set our DVR to record it while we were gone so the kids watched it again on Sunday evening. While they were watching, the doorbell rang. When the kids opened the door, they saw that Santa had brought them their very own Elf on the Shelf!

Bailey squealed with delight when she saw it! She couldn't believe Santa had brought us a real Elf on the Shelf! We carefully opened the box, read the book, and discussed all the rules about our new elf friend. Every night the elf flies to the North Pole to tell Santa whether or not the kids have been good. "There's only one rule that you have to follow so I will come back and be here tomorrow: Please do not touch me. My magic might go, and Santa won't hear all I've see or I know." The elf gets its magic by being named. The kids decided on "Snowflake."

Bailey has been wonderful! On the first night she wanted to make sure Snowflake told Santa that she had been good so she went right to bed. Campbell, on the other hand, didn't really care. The kid has an aversion to sleep. We were having one of our usual bedtime battles with him when Judd told him he was going to tell Snowflake to tell Santa that he was not being a very good boy because he wouldn't go to bed. Campbell looked his Daddy square in the eye and said, "Tell him." A little while later, I made the same threat. This time Campbell said, "My Daddy already told him." Oh dear!

When Snowflake returns to our house each morning, he is always in a different place! The kids have had fun looking for him when they wake up.

Day 1: Mantel

Day Two: Kids' Bathroom

Day Three: Gracie's Stocking

Day Four: Bailey's Room

We can't wait to see where Snowflake will end up next!
